The factors that can influence the cost of an IVF cycle

Cost of Lab Tests

  • Tests for Females: A blood test (AMH test) is done to check the egg reserve and the levels of the hormones which are vital for management of the cycle. A blood test is done to corroborate any viral indicators. Once, an embryo transfer is conducted by the doctor, blood test for checking the status of pregnancy is also done (hcg hormone level is raised in case of pregnancy).
  • Tests for Males: Examination of the semen is done to check the count, motility, and morphology of the sperm. Here also, a blood test is done for checking any viral indicators

 Ultrasound Costs

One of the vital part of an IVF procedure is the ultrasound which helps to observe the ovaries in the screen so as to know when the eggs would be ready for the retrieval process. It is also very useful for the doctor to observe the morphology of the female reproductive system like

  • Shape and structure of the Uterus.
  • The thickness of the endometrium
  • Ovarian size
  • The number of eggs left in the ovaries can be counted by  the counting the Antral follicles.

 Cost for the Anaesthesia

The extraction/retrieval of the eggs is carried out under the effect of general anaesthesia.

Embryo Freezing Cost

After transferring the embryo, if some embryos are left during an IVF process, the patient can opt to have them stored via cryopreservation for using in the future.

Laparoscopy/Hysteroscopy Cost

Any process, whether a laparoscopy or hysteroscopy, if used, would be charged separately, thus increasing the cost for the IVF.

Charges for the Operation Theatre

The cost for the operation theatre where the operation is performed, doctor’s and nurse’s fees are also included in the package.

There are other factors which can affect the rate/ charge for the IVF procedure:

  • IVF through own cells: In this, the eggs and the sperms which are used are one’s own.
  • Donor egg/sperm IVF: In case of the donor egg or sperm being used, obviously, there would be additional costs that would be included in the IVF treatment. Donor eggs are usually more expensive than donor sperm.
  • Donor Embryo IVF: The costs for donor embryo is low because of no requirement of stimulation medicines and the embryo is ready to be placed in the right time.
  • Surrogacy: The surrogacy cost in Delhi or, for that matter, any other place is high as the costs for all the medicines and several other expenses of the surrogate are to be covered by the ones hiring her.
