You must be familiar with AMH tests and hormones like insulin, estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and oxytocin. While being pregnant you must have also heard of the hCG hormone (Human chorionic gonadotropin).  The Anti-Mullerian hormone may not be the most heard hormone or you can also say it is well-known regarding reproductive health. Thus it is sure to know if you are willing to get pregnant in the future. Now the question arises when to take AMH test, if you are trying to conceive and not able to then your doctor may suggest for AMH test.

AMH Test | It’s Procedure, Results, Cost & How is it Done

What AMH is used for?

AMH is used to know a woman’s ability to produce eggs that can be fertilized for pregnancy. Women’s ovaries can make thousands of eggs at the time of their childbearing years but with the age, it keeps on declining. AMH level is a way to know how many potential eggs a woman is left with. It is also known as ovarian reserve.

Women with high ovarian reserve have a better chance of getting pregnant and also can wait for years for getting pregnant. On the other hand, women with a less ovarian reserve may find it hard to get pregnant and should not delay pregnancy.

What is the need for AMH test?

Men can produce numerous sperms in their lifetime on the other hand women have only a limited supply of eggs in their lifetime. So if a woman exhausts all her eggs then there is no chance of getting pregnant naturally. Thus, when planning for a baby women must identify and gauge their ovarian reserve.

Anti-Mullerian Hormone test is known to be a simple blood test that is done to check the woman’s ovarian reserve besides diagnosing issues such as PCOD, low ovarian reserve, or early menopause.

You may need this test if you are facing difficulty in conceiving. This test helps you to know what your chances of getting pregnant are. Well, if you are seeing a fertility expert, then your doctor may get this test done to analyze how well you will respond to fertility treatment, like In vitro fertilization (IVF).

A high level of AMH means you have many eggs available and will respond well to treatment and a low level of AMH means fewer eggs are available and may not respond well to the treatment.

Women with symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome also need to go through this test. These include:

  • Early menopause or amenorrhea, menstrual disorder
  • Excess hair growth of face and body
  • Acne
  • Weight gain

Besides all these women with ovarian cancer also need to get AMH test done to know if the treatment is working or not.

How is AMH test done?

AMH test procedure is a simple blood test that is done during your menstrual cycle. AMH test means to analyze your ovarian reserve.

What is a normal AMH level for age?

AMH is a simple blood test and the measurement remains mostly the same throughout your cycle, so your doc can suggest for the test anytime.

Here is the following level (in nanograms per milliliter) that shows the lower limit of serum AMH values by age:

  • 45 years old: 0.5 ng/ml
  • 40 years old: 1 ng/ml
  • 35 years old: 1.5 ng/ml
  • 30 years old: 2.5 ng/ml
  • 25 years old: 3.0 ng/ml

So the result is reviewed by your doctor and depending on it appropriate treatment is recommended.

What do the AMH test results mean?

Women who are trying to conceive can get to know their chances to get pregnant through this test. It is also beneficial to let you know when to get pregnant. A high level of AMH is considered good for conceiving whereas low level indicates that you will have trouble in conceiving.

Sometimes when AMH level is very high it also indicates polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). There is no cure for PCOS but its symptoms can be managed with a proper medication and lifestyle changes.

How to increase AMH levels?

There are no medications available to increase AMH level but you can somewhat increase it with proper diet which is rich in necessary nutrients, like vitamin D

What is a good AMH level for IVF?

Unfortunately, there is no ‘ideal’ AMH when going for IVF. It all depends on your doctor that how will he/she treat you based on your AMH levels. If you are opting for IVF and your age id below 35 then having low but measurable AMH would not make you worried. You will be prescribed medication that will help you to stimulate good quality follicles. You should remember low AMH does not mean low-quality eggs but it means low quantity eggs which is not that important when going for Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART). If you are above 35 and have low AMH then your success for IVF gets greatly reduced.

What is a normal AMH level?

Anti-mullerian hormone level is made in the reproductive tissue and its normal range is over 1.0 ng/ml

Can I get pregnant with low AMH?

It is surely possible to get pregnant with your eggs or donor eggs with low AMH levels. It is because it just takes one healthy egg to get pregnant. Your journey of fertility is not completely based on AMH level.

What is the best time for AMH test?

The AMH level in a woman’s blood is a good indicator of ovarian reserve. Even during your menstrual cycle, the AMH level does not change so the AMH test can be done at any time of the month.

Can I increase my AMH?

The AMH level indicates the number of eggs present in your ovary. No medication is available to increase the AMH level. Increasing your AMH level does not increase the number of eggs in your ovary.

Does stress affect AMH levels?

Studies showed that stress level is responsible for reproductive failure. Studies have also shown that there is a significant correlation between psychological stress and a decrease in AMH levels for infertile women.
